I can’t get too excited about Dianne Feinstein’s proposed “assault weapons ban” being dropped from the federal gun control package. Even supporters of the ban admitted it had zero chance of passing in the Senate, and it will still be proposed as part of the deal via an amendment. The Idaho Senate is still considering House Bill 192, which allows applicants of concealed carry permits to apply for an “enhanced” permit if they meet “enhanced” criteria. The additional criteria includes live-fire range time and instruction on gun laws. Some gun owners support this bill, because they expect that the enhanced Idaho concealed carry permit will allow Idaho permit holders to enjoy greater reciprocity in other states. There’s law, and there’s commerce. There are Second Amendment rights, and there are the needs of customers, workers and bosses to feel safe while conducting business. There is heightened post-Newtown concern about gun violence, and there is the way most Idaho businesses deal with customers who carry guns openly: the same as before.
